Why is True RMS so important: When measuring the value of an alternating current signal (AC) most hand held digital
multimeters convert the signal into an average value and apply a correction factor. Average values are only accurate, if the
input sinusoidal signal is stable and unchanging. However perfect sine waves are rare in most industrial and commercial
applications. True RMS multimeters deliver more accurate AC measurements using the principle based on the laws of
physics: the current, passing through a resistive load, dissipates energy in the form of heat. If the resistive load is a heating
element and it remains constant, then the heat produced will be directly proportionate to the current passing through the load.
Thus True RMS multimeters measure the heat dissipated by a constant resistive load and apply several formulas to calculate
True RMS current value.
Due to various disturbances and faults the deviation between True RMS and average current measurement may reach 40 %
of the value.
